Kanamachi to Disneyland: The Complete Route Guide

Tokyo Disneyland entrance sign

I live in Kanamachi and give this route to Disney-bound guests every week. It's simpler than it looks on a map. Here's exactly what you do.

Quick Route Summary

Kanamachi → JR Joban Line → Matsudo → JR Musashino Line → Maihama

⏱ 45–50 minutes | 💴 ~480 yen | 🔁 1 transfer

The Route (One Transfer)

From Kanamachi Station:

  1. Take the JR Joban Line toward Matsudo/Toride
  2. Get off at Matsudo Station (about 5 minutes)
  3. Transfer to the JR Musashino Line toward Maihama
  4. Ride directly to Maihama Station (about 35-40 minutes)

That's it. One transfer at Matsudo. Total time is 45-50 minutes. Cost is around 480 yen one way.

I usually write this on a card for guests: "JR Joban Line → Matsudo → JR Musashino Line → Maihama"

At Matsudo Station

The transfer is straightforward. Both lines are JR, so you stay within the fare gates. Follow signs for the Musashino Line toward "Tokyo" or "Maihama."

Platform numbers may vary, but the signage is clear. When in doubt, look for the train displaying "Maihama" or "Tokyo" on the destination board.

Timing Your Trip

Morning (Getting There)

If you want to arrive for park opening (usually 8:00 or 9:00 AM depending on season), leave Kanamachi by 7:00-7:30 AM.

Good news: morning trains to Disney go against the commuter flow. While salary workers pile into trains heading toward Tokyo, you're going the opposite direction. This route runs opposite commuter flow in the morning, so seats are usually available.

Evening (Getting Back)

This is where it gets tricky. Everyone leaves after fireworks and parades. Trains back are crowded, especially the first couple departures after park close.

Options: - Leave a bit before the final show to beat crowds - Wait 20-30 minutes after close for trains to clear out - Accept that you'll stand for part of the journey

Last trains from Maihama to Kanamachi (via Matsudo) depart around 11:15-11:30 PM on weekdays. Check exact times before going—missing the last train means an expensive taxi or waiting until morning.

Alternative Routes

Via Tokyo Station

You can also go through Tokyo Station—Joban Line to Tokyo, then Keiyo Line to Maihama. This takes longer (55-65 minutes) and requires navigating Tokyo Station's complicated layout. I don't recommend it unless you have a specific reason.

Via Nishi-Funabashi

Some maps show routes through Nishi-Funabashi. Possible, but not simpler than the Matsudo route. Stick with what works.

Practical Tips

Load Your IC Card

Put at least 1,500 yen on your Suica or Pasmo before the trip. Round trip is about 960 yen per person, and you might want to grab drinks from station vending machines.

Download Offline Maps

Grab a screenshot of the route or download offline maps before leaving. You don't want to be figuring this out with no signal underground.

Know the Last Train

Seriously. Set a phone alarm. One guest got so caught up in park activities they missed the last train and had to taxi back. That cost over 10,000 yen.

Bring Entertainment for Kids

45 minutes each way adds up. Have something to keep younger kids occupied on the train. Older kids usually manage fine—some enjoy watching the scenery.

At Maihama Station

When you arrive at Maihama, Tokyo Disneyland is a short walk from the station. Just follow the crowds—you can't miss it.

For DisneySea, take the Disney Resort Line monorail one stop (300 yen per ride, or use a Disney Resort pass if you have one).

Luggage

Don't bring large bags to the parks. Coin lockers at Maihama fill up quickly on busy days. Leave luggage at our place and travel light.

If you're checking out on a Disney day, we can usually accommodate luggage storage or late pickup. Check the booking policies for details.

Is the Commute Worth It?

Guests sometimes ask this. My answer: for most families, yes.

You trade 45 minutes of train time for significant cost savings and more living space. Kids often don't mind the train—it's part of the adventure. Some fall asleep on the way back, which isn't the worst thing.

The families who regret the commute are usually those with very young children (under 3-4) who melt down on trains when tired. If that's your situation, consider staying closer to Disney.

For everyone else, the route is easy and the savings add up.

Thinking about accommodation options? See our comparison of where to stay for Tokyo Disneyland. Disney is just one of many day trips from Kanamachi that work well from eastern Tokyo.

Questions about the journey? Ask before your trip. I'm happy to walk through specifics for your situation.

If you're planning a Disney-focused trip, staying in Kanamachi saves money while keeping Disney under 50 minutes away.
